A survey by Deloitte & Touché USA found:
- 80% of adults received at least one gift card to an apparel or food store.
- 33% received at least one gift card to a restaurant.
- 14% received one gift card to a mall or shopping center.
- 10% received a gift card that could be used at a variety of stores.
- 5% received a gift card for personal services.
- 5% received a gift card for use on an internet site.
Furthermore, the average adult received 3.2 gift cards during this last holiday season, showing an increase from 2.5 cards the prior holiday season.
Retailers enjoy an additional benefit in that 62% of the gift cards redeemed the redeemer spends more than the face value of the card.
Consumers have expressed a desire to receive gift cards for holidays and other events.
Two -Thirds of Consumers polled said that they intended on purchasing a minimum of one Gift Card this Holiday season while (52.8%) indicated they would like to receive a Gift Card this year. This being said, Consumers will be spending quite an increased amount in 2009, compared to the spending of $24.92 BILLION DOLLARS in the 2008 Holiday Season.
